Forget the usual shiny red plastic props. This year a simple handmade felt flower brooch will be donned in support of Red Nose Day.
Tomorrow is Red Nose Day and the school’s asked each child to wear something red (in addition to – not instead of – their uniform).
Every year the choice is red tights, red hair ribbons or a red sweater. This year we decided to be a little creative for Red Nose Day and settled on making a pretty red felt brooch.
The brooch will be worn long after tomorrow, but will always be a fond reminder of the awareness it created for a worthy cause.
This project took about 45 minutes to make and is a fantastic activity for little fingers to make (although stitching the brooch back could be tricky for small fingers!).
Here’s what we used to make the brooch:
* 3x red felt flower cut-outs
* 1x small pink felt flower cut-out
* Embroidery thread (pink and red)
* Brooch pin
* Large red wooden bead
* Fusible interfacing (optional)
Here’s how we put it together:
Thread the pink embroidery thread around the edge of the red felt flowers, and vice versa with the red thread and pink flower. Stiffen each flower by ironing on fusible interfacing to the back of each flower. I destroyed one of the felt flowers by having the iron too hot… round two was an improvement.
Place all three red flowers together and add the smaller one on top. Finally, thread the wooden bead to the centre, and at the same time thread the brooch pin too.
Happy stitching ; – )
